The stink badgers have a very restricted range, occurring only on Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the North Natuna Islands and some smaller islands in the Philippenes. See the distribution map.
The Indonesian stink badger Mydaus javanensis is the more widespread of these two badgers, ranging across Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the North Natuna Islands.
The Palawan stink badger M. marchei is found only on the Philippene islands of Palawan and Busuanga, which lie to the north and east of Borneo.

This species lives mainly in mountainous areas on those islands where it occurs, including the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park in West Java, an area of volcanic mountains which are covered with one of the last relatively undisturbed mountain forests of West Java. The park is situated between approximately 1,000 metres and 3,019 metres above sea level. In Malaysia, this badger is reported to live in scattered localities in the lowlands and low hills of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. [ c011 ]
This species is said to inhabit grassland-thicket and cultivated areas. [ b003-01 ]
