Browser compatibility

A browser is a piece of software used for viewing web pages. I have attempted to make this site compatible with as many browsers as possible. The Badger Pages will look at their best when viewed using the latest versions of the (External) Firefox , (External) Internet Explorer , (External) Netscape (Navigator / Communicator) and (External) Opera browsers. I have tested the site with Firefox 1.5, Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0, Netscape 7.1 and Opera 8.5 on a PC running Windows XP. The site also looks OK using (External) Safari on the Mac (according to results from (External) iCapture ). However there are problems viewing the Badger pages with Internet Explorer 5 on the Mac.

Some of the earlier versions of the above browsers may also be OK. However I do not recommend viewing this site using Netscape version 4 or below (best to use version 6 or higher), or Internet Explorer below version 4 (best to use version 5.5 or higher).

I would welcome feedback on how this site looks and functions using other browser programmes, operating systems (such as Unix / Linux and Mac OS) and platforms (such as Macs, handheld devices and Web TV).

JavaScript

Whichever browser you use, this site will look and function better if your browser's ability to read JavaScript is switched on. Fortunately, the ability to read JavaScript is switched on by default in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera (although Windows XP Service Pack 2 may alter that for Internet Explorer). However, JavaScript is by no means essential. I have taken steps to make sure as far as possible that those browsing without JavaScript should still find that the Badger Pages look and function OK.

Screen resolution

This site has been designed for viewing on monitors with screen resolutions of 800 x 600 pixels - owned by about a third of all visitors to this site. However about half of all visits to the Badger Pages are made by people with a screen resolution of 1024 x 760 pixels. I therefore plan to use the magic of JavaScript and alternative CSS layouts to present the site in a wider format and with larger text for those people, at a later date. The site should look OK on monitors with resolutions larger than 800 x 600, and also at a resolution of 600 x 480 (used by relatively few people these days). If you want web pages to fit your screen no matter what your screen resolution, try the latest Opera browsers as they have the ability to stretch or compress web pages to fit your screen size.

Printing

Using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to design the layout of a website means in theory that the webmaster can make each page 'printer-friendly'. In other words when you print a page, all the material which would be meaningless on the printed page (navigation links for example) is automatically stripped away. This generates a printed page containing just the 'content' of the web page.

To further enhance printing options, I will at a future date include on most of the Badger Pages, a link which will generate 'printer-friendly' versions of those pages.

Accessibility

Designing a website means finding a balance between creating the layout and style of presentation the webmaster wants, and making sure that as many people as possible can access the information on the site. I have attempted to make the Badger Pages much more accessible than they have been in the past, by using CSS in designing the site's layout.

I have also made text-only versions of all of the Badger Pages available, thanks to a CGI script called (External) Betsie . Just click on the 'Text-only' link near the top of any Badger Page to access a version of the site from which all images have been removed, and on which text size can be changed at will.

For the time being, the size of the text on the Badger Pages canot be changed by users of Internet Explorer. Users of Firefox, Netscape and Opera should be able to adjust the size of the text. However, adjusting the size of the text on the Badger Pages can result in 'breaking' the layout of the page if the text is made very large. Text size adjustment is an issue I plan to address in a future upgrade of the site.

I welcome feedback from visitors with visual impairments, on how this site looks and functions using standard browsers, text-only browsers such as Lynx, or screen-reading software.
