The hog badger ranges widely across south-east Asia. It occurs in the following countries:

• Bangladesh : The hog badger is rare in this country [ b034 ], and probably occurs only in the north.
• Bhutan : This hog badger was first described scientifically by F G Cuvier in 1825 from a specimen found in southern Bhutan. The species is still present in Bhutan today. [ w128 , b130-06 ]
• Cambodia : I have found no references to any specific locations in this country for the hog badger, but all distribution maps indicate that hog badgers occur here.
• China : Confirmed from the following provinces: Anhui, Beijing, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hebei, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Qinghai, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan (including the Wolong Reserve), Xizang (Tibet), Yunnan and Zhejiang. [ w128 , w127-02 ]
• India : Confirmed from the states of Sikkim, Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. [ w154 , b130-06 ]
• Indonesia : Sumatra, including Kerinci Seblat National Park and Gunung Leuser National Park. [ w260-09 , w153 , w260-07 ]
• Laos (Lao People's Democratic Republic): Confirmed from Luang Namtha's Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area. [ w152 , w127-02 ]
• Myanmar (formerly Burma): Although the hog badger is confirmed as occurring in Myanmar, I have found no records of any specific places where it occurs within this country. [ b130-06 ]
• Thailand : - Confirmed from Kaengkrachan National Park [ w163 ] and Khao Yai National Park [ w057 ].
• Vietnam : confirmed from Cat Tien National Park [ w133 ] and Cuc Phuong Forest [ c006 ].

Habitat preferences

Forests are the hog badger's principal habitat, including lowland jungles, wooded highlands up to 3000 metres or more in northern China, semi-evergreen forests in western Manipur (India), and teak-gurjan forests on the borders of India and Myanmar. The hog badger has also been seen in more open habitats from time to time. [ b001 , b034 ]
