The generally accepted classification for the hog badger is as follows:
Class : Mammalia (Mammals)
Family : Mustelidae (Weasels etc.)
Sub-family : Melinae (True badgers)
Genus & species : Arctonyx collaris (The hog badger)
This species was first described by F G Cuvier in 1825 [ w005-03 ], from a specimen taken from southern Bhutan [ w128 ].
The following subspecies have been described:
