Classification

The generally accepted classification for the hog badger is as follows:

Class : Mammalia (Mammals)

Family : Mustelidae (Weasels etc.)

Sub-family : Melinae (True badgers)

Genus & species : Arctonyx collaris (The hog badger)

This species was first described by F G Cuvier in 1825 [ w005-03 ], from a specimen taken from southern Bhutan [ w128 ].

Subspecies

The following subspecies have been described:

• Arctonyx collaris collaris - the "nominate" subspecies, this occurs in Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam, in the south-eastern foothills of the Himalayas.
• Arctonyx collaris dictator - the largest subspecies, found in Thailand, Vietnam and northern Myanmar (Burma).
• Arctonyx collaris hoeveni - confined to Sumatra.
• Arctonyx collaris leucolaemus - found in northern China.
• Arctonyx collaris albugularis - inhabits most of China, south of the range occupied by the previous subspecies.
• Arctonyx collaris consul - occupies southern Assam and Myanmar.
