This badger was knocked down by a car in September 2000 and left for dead. Fortunately, the occupants of another car saw the badger lying in the road and stopped between the casualty and oncoming traffic, with hazard warning lights flashing. They used their mobile phone to call the RSPCA, and the RSPCA contacted me.

When I arrived at the scene, the badger was still lying on the road, barely conscious. He was clearly in no state to try biting me, so I had no qualms about grabbing him by the scruff of the neck and the rump, and lifting him into the waiting rescue cage. I thanked the people who had stopped with the badger - they had done all the right things. Then I rushed the badger to Towcester Veterinary Centre, where he received treatment.

Fortunately, the badger was suffering only from mild concussion. All he required after treatment was a few days rest while he recovered fully. This was provided by Brockwatch members Paul and Lida Fitzgerald. Then the badger was ready to go back to the wild. The photograph shows the badger in a dog crate in the back of my car, just before I took him back to where he came from.

The badger was released around dusk, next to a hedgerow on the other side of the field adjacent to the road where he had been knocked down. Once he emerged from the cage he walked into the hedgerow, and after he got his bearings he dashed off along the inside of the hedge. Hopefully he has made the most of his second chance. I am pleased to say that I have not seen any road casualties in that area since.
