We are attempting to reduce the number of Road Traffic Accident victims (RTAs) in our area through our 'RTA Campaign'. This campaign consists of several elements: Rescuing injured badgersNot all badgers hit by motor vehicles are killed straightaway - some are left injured on the road. We have a network of Rescue Officers equipped to rescue these casualties. In many cases, the injuries are very severe and the badgers we rescue have to be put to sleep to end their suffering. But some survive, and when they are fit and well these badgers are released back into the wild. Recording RTAsWe collate reports of dead badgers seen on our roads. If we can, we go out to the casualties to log their exact locations, record other items of information, and move the bodies from the roadside. By recording exactly where badgers are run over, we are able to identify "RTA blackspots" - those stretches of road where badgers are killed year after year. Targetting RTA blackspotsHaving identified a number of RTA blackspots in our area, we have managed to get road signs erected on some of those stretches of road (see photo above). These have been paid for with funding from national charities such as Care for the Wild, as Northamptonshire County Council will not pay for the signs. One pair of signs costs over 500. Awareness-raisingWe are also making people aware of the RTA problem, and what can be done to cut the carnage on our roads, through features in the press, exhibitions, leaflets, and this web page!
