The Badgers

By Georgina Wills, Leicestershire.

Georgina wrote this poem after being taken badger watching. It won her first prize in a poetry competition for Leicestershire Schools. Well done Georgina!

This poem first appeared in "Badger Cub News", produced by the NFBG.

They came out of their hole,
Slowly coming closer,
The older ones sniffed the air,
Suspiciously, was it safe?
Creamy faces with muddy / black markings,
Their weak eyes spied the nuts.
They waddled along on their stubby legs,
The first one munched a nut,
They they all started crunching,
Older ones were still alert,
They hungrily came closer,
Sniffing the rubber boots,
Seven cubs, nosy, selfish,
Swinging their bodies round,
Greedily fighting for nuts,
The wind blew,
They got out scent,
Scurried back and out of sight,
Slowly they returned,
Pushing and shoving all the way,
The last nuts were gone...
And so were the badgers.
