What's being done to protect stink badgers

A review of the laws and practical action being taken to protect the stink badgers and their habitats.

Legal protection

The Indonesian stink badger

The Indonesian stink badger Mydaus javanensis has been protected by law in Indonesia since 1979 [w058].

The Palawan stink badger

I do not know whether the Palawan stink badger is protected by Philippene law; as an endemic species it certainly ought to be.

Habitat protection

The Indonesian stink badger

Populations of the Indonesian stink badger occur in the following protected areas:

  • Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, Java (one of the first national parks to be established in Indonesia, covering an area of 15,000 hectares) [w059].
  • Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan, Borneo (covering an area of 80,000 ha. in the flood plain of the upper Kapuas river). [w260-03]

The Palawan stink badger

If there are any protected areas which include habitats occupied by the Palawan stink badger, I have not found out about them yet.

Research and conservation work

The Indonesian stink badger

I am not aware of any surveys, studies or conservation work being carried out involving this species.

The Palawan stink badger

Peter Widmann has observed this species on Palawan and hopes to publish a paper in the not too distant future. Apart from this, I am not aware of any surveys, studies or conservation work involving Mydaus marchei.

Welfare

It seems unlikely that there are any organisations carrying out work to enhance the welfare of either species of stink badger.
