Over the years more than 2,000 people have watched the badgers with me at "my" sett. Sometimes though, it has seemed that the badgers were watching us! On a serious note, if badgers are staring at you like this, it obviously means that they know you're there. This is the moment to keep absolutely still and quiet. The badgers' eyesight is quite poor, but their hearing is excellent. This photograph was the result of a long evening at the sett, waiting for the two cubs to stand still so that I could photograph them. They had been romping about and play-fighting with each other all around the sett, but mostly in places where I couldn't get a good view of them. Finally they relented, and stood by one of the sett entrances saying "cheese", or whatever it is that badgers say when posing for the camera ("earthworms" maybe?). Their mum couldn't resist getting in the picture with them.
