A badger snuffle hole

Image: Eurasian badger (Meles meles) - snuffle hole.

Comments

There are many different names for the little holes that badgers make when they dig for worms or insect larvae. I call them scrapes, but they are also known as snuffle holes. I usually find such holes in pasture, but occasionally, as here, I have found them in arable fields.

You may just be able to make out the pen I placed in the pit to give an indication of the depth of the hole (it's roughly at the "2 o'clock" position); the pen is about 6 inches (15cm) long.
