X-ray of a badger's broken leg

Image: Eurasian badger (Meles meles) - X-ray of broken leg.

Comments

This picture graphically illustrates the extent of the injuries which can be caused when a speeding vehicle hits a badger. The X-ray clearly shows how a badger's leg has been badly broken in a road traffic accident; both the ulna and the radius have been shattered.

Broken bones can often be re-set and will heal in time. However, when bones in a foreleg are involved, careful consideration must be given to the future of the patient. The forelegs of badgers are subjected to considerable stresses, as they are used for digging tunnels and to dig for food. If a badger is released back into the wild with a front leg which has been repaired but which is not as strong as it should be, it's survival may be in doubt.
