A shaft dug into a sett by badger diggers

Image: Eurasian badger (Meles meles) - sett.

Comments

Finding a hole like this, a shaft dug by people and leading straight down into a badger's tunnel, means only one thing. Badger diggers have sent a terrier wearing a radio collar into the sett, and have dug down at the point where the radio signal was strongest. This will usually be the place where the terrier is holding a badger at bay.

In this case, the diggers only had to go down for a matter of 2-3 feet (60-90cm) before exposing the tunnel. The pen, which is about 6 inches (15cm) long, gives an idea of the width of the hole. This shaft is actually quite narrow, so the diggers may not have taken a badger from here. There were however wider shafts nearby, and it seems likely that at least one badger was taken, probably for a badger baiting session.
