A badger cub

Image: Eurasian badger (Meles meles).

Comments

This is a photo of Nightshade, taken in May 1993 when she was a young cub (around 12 weeks old). She had no other cubs to play with, as her mother (Primrose - see next Photo File) only had one cub at a time. Normally, badgers have two or three young per litter. Nightshade grew up to have four litters of her own, three lots of twins and one singleton.

Cubs are very playful, and love chasing and play-fighting. This helps to develop their coordination, and prepare them for real fights later in life. As Nightshade had no litter-mates to play with, she would sometimes play with Charlie, her older brother who was born the year before.
