The general characteristics of the European badger, Meles meles, are well illustrated in this picture: the broad, wedge-shaped head and body, short but stocky legs, short tail, greyish-coloured back and flanks, black underparts, and of course the black and white striped head. This is the bear-like body of a ground-living forager. Many people are surprised to learn that the badger is in fact closely related to stoats, weasels and their allies, active predators which are long in body and swift of foot.
