Face to face with the American badger

Like the Eurasian badger, this species has a pair of dark eyestripes running from its muzzle to the top of its head. However, the American badger's stripes are closer together than those of the Eurasian badger, so that the animal's eyes are on the outer edges of the stripes. Notice also how the white stripe between the eyestripes runs on down onto the badger's back.

The large black markings - or "badges" - on this badger's cheeks are another difference between this species and the European badgers.
