What does Taxidea mean? What are American badgers called in Italian, Norwegian or Lakota? These questions and more are answered here.

English names

The American badger is also referred to as the North American badger or (more rarely) the New World badger. It is also known as the silver badger [b004], presumably because of the silvery grey fur of some specimens.

Latin name

Taxidea is a combination of the New Latin word for badger, taxus, and the Greek word for appearance, idea [w016].
